چکیده

In alluvial coastal aquifers, finer sediments are preferentially deposited along the downstream direction, so the hydraulic conductivity is generally heterogeneous and changes with distance from the coastline. To investigate the influence of aquifer heterogeneity on seawater-groundwater interaction, a new two-dimensional model characterising groundwater flow in an aquiferaquitard system was developed assuming that the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer linearly increases with the distance from the coastline along the inland direction. A closed-form analytical solution was derived using the separation-of-variables method. Comparing the new solution with the numerical solution by COMSOLMultiphysics (Sweden) based on the finite-element method, one can see that the new solution agreed with the numerical solution very well except at the early time. We found that both aquitard leakance and the heterogeneity factor (b) could result in the propagation bias. The propagation bias represents the inconsistency between the theoretical calculation and the observed strong attenuation and small time lag between the head and tide fluctuations. The attenuation decreased with perpendicular distance from the coastline (x-axis), whereas the time lag increased with distance along the x-axis. The relationship between the time lag and the distance along the x-axis seemed to be linear when b was 0.001m , whereas it obeyed a power function when b was greater than 0.01m . A two-dimensional analytical solution for groundwater flow in a leaky confined aquifer system near open tidal water

Groundwater in coastal areas is commonly disturbed by tidal fluctuations. A two-dimensional analytical solution is derived to describe the groundwater fluctuation in a leaky confined aquifer system near open tidal water under the assumption that the groundwater head in the confined aquifer fluctuates in response to sea tide whereas that of the overlying unconfined aquifer remains constant. The ...

Semi-analytical solution for flow in leaky unconfined aquifer–aquitard systems

This study presents a semi-analytical solution for the problem of leakage in an unconfined aquifer bounded below by an aquitard of finite or semi-infinite extent. The homogeneous anisotropic unconfined aquifer of infinite radial extent is pumped continuously at a constant rate from a well of infinitesimal radius. The aquitard is also homogeneous , anisotropic and of infinite radial extent. Flow...

Semi-analytical solution for flow in a leaky unconfined aquifer toward a partially penetrating pumping well

r a 200 .029 : +1 208 cgiss.bo Summary A semi-analytical solution is presented for the problem of flow in a system consisting of unconfined and confined aquifers, separated by an aquitard. The unconfined aquifer is pumped continuously at a constant rate from a well of infinitesimal radius that partially penetrates its saturated thickness. The solution is termed semi-analytical because the exact...

Contribution of the aquitard to the regional groundwater hydrochemistry of the underlying confined aquifer in the Pearl River Delta, China.

Aquitards are capable of generating and preserving large amounts of chemicals. The release of the chemicals from the aquitards poses a potential contamination risk to groundwater that may be used as a drinking water source. This work aimed to identify the contribution of hydrogeochemical processes in the aquitards to groundwater hydrochemistry in the underlying confined basal aquifer by studyin...

An analytical solution of groundwater response to tidal fluctuation in a leaky confined aquifer

An analytical solution is derived to investigate the influence of leakage on tidal response in a coastal leaky confined aquifer system. The analytical solution developed here is more general than the traditional solution obtained by Ferris [1951], which can be regarded as a special case of the solution presented in this paper. This solution is based on a conceptual model under the assumption th...
